TSWA 4A all-state football team: Cooper's Robinson 1st team

Twelve Big Country football players — six from Big Spring and three each from Cooper and Stephenville — were named to the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A all-state team released Friday.
Cooper senior T.C. Robinson, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound defensive back, was the only Big Country player named to the first team.

Reese Williams was thinking about following in his brother’s footsteps and getting a good education first when he signed with Davidson College on Wednesday. The chance to continue his football career was an extra perk.
“It’s a huge perk,” the 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior tight end from Cooper said.

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — The Little Southwest Conference is back.
Abilene High and Cooper were reunited with Midland, Midland Lee, Odessa and Odessa Permian in District 3-5A for at least the next two seasons, according to the University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment plan unveiled Monday.

It appears Cooper athletics are headed back to Class 5A next season after two years in Class 4A for the first time in school history.
If so, it’s been a short but good run for a program that’s struggled in most sports its last years in 5A. Cooper has won six district titles in team sports since dropping to Class 4A — two in team tennis and one each in football, volleyball, girls golf and girls track — and more could be on the way with the spring sports still ahead.

Mike Spradlin’s voice broke as he tried to hold back the tears. Saying goodbye to this group of Cooper seniors wasn’t easy for the Cougars’ coach.
Yet, say goodbye he did.
J.W. Walsh threw three touchdown passes and ran for three more as Denton Guyer rolled past Cooper, 57-34, in a Class 4A Division I Region I semifinal game Saturday at Shotwell Stadium.

Even though his team was down 24-0 early in the second quarter, Cooper quarterback Ryan Heslep had no doubt the Cougars would come back to beat El Paso Del Valle in the second round of the Class 4A Division I playoffs.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior would come back to throw for 279 yards and four touchdowns as the Coogs rallied for a 51-41 victory.

MIDLAND — Down 24-0 early in the second quarter Saturday, Cooper quarterback Ryan Heslep was determined this wasn’t how his senior year was going to end.
Heslep came back to throw four touchdown passes, including two to senior Reese Williams, and Alford Cooper ran for two touchdowns as the Cooper Cougars pulled out a wild 51-41 victory over the Del Valle Conquistadores in a Class 4A Division I area-round playoff game at Grande Communications Stadium.

Pick your poison. The Cooper Cougars have three guys who can hurt you on the ground. They have even more weapons when they throw the ball.
Five receivers have 20 or more catches for the Coogs this season — and all five have nearly 300 yards receiving and a total of 14 touchdowns.
In all, 14 Cooper players have caught a total of 195 passes for 2,599 yards — good for an average of 13.3 yards per catch — and 22 touchdowns.

LUBBOCK — The Cooper Cougars turned to the elements to exorcise its Demons.
Davon Riddick, Kendrick Powdrill and Alford Cooper — nicknamed Earth, Wind and Fire respectively — combined for 335 yards and four touchdowns as the Cougars expelled the Dumas Demons 52-14 in a Class 4A Division I bidistrict playoff game Saturday at Lowrey Field.

Davon Riddick thought he would be playing a backup role behind Kendrick Powdrill and Alford Cooper in the Cooper backfield this season. After all, Powdrill was the District 4-4A newcomer of the year last year, and Cooper got a chance to play on the varsity during the playoffs.

The Coogs left no doubt, routing Plainview 48-3 on Friday at Shotwell Stadium, completing a 5-0 run through district play.
